25TH ANNUAL NATIONAL
TOURISM WEEK
CHAMPIONS
NATION’S $740 BILLION TRAVEL
INDUSTRY
Silver anniversary theme encourages
travelers to “Discover Great
American Traditions”
The
Corning Area Chamber of Commerce
and the Information Center of
Corning join hundreds of cities,
states and travel-related businesses
nationwide in recognition of the
25th annual National
Tourism Week to be held May
10-18. Designated by Congress and
established by presidential
proclamation in 1983, the event
celebrates the value and scope of
the nation’s $740 billion travel and
tourism industry as well as the
economic and social contributions it
brings to Corning.
This year’s theme, “Discover Great
American Traditions,” encourages
travel to American locales and
highlights the role that tourism
plays in discovering the icons of a
destination.
“Hotels and meeting facilities,
attractions, retail shops,
restaurants and transportation
providers are among the local
businesses greatly impacted by
travel to (Corning/New York),” said
Jennifer Mong, Director of Visitor
Services at the Corning Area Chamber
of Commerce.
The Information Center of Corning is
celebrating National Tourism Week by
offering a 30% discount on selected
Corning NY souvenir items. The sale
includes t-shirts, pinwheels, Market
Street Windows Posters, and more.
The Information Center is located at
1 W. Market Street in Corning next
to Centerway Square and provides
information for Living, Learning,
Playing, and Working in the Corning
Area.
Nationwide, the U.S. travel industry
directly employs 7.5 million people,
generates payroll of $178 billion
and tax revenues of about $110
billion. TIA ranks travel fifth
among 20 major private industry
sectors. Visitors to the U.S. spent
more here than U.S. residents
traveling abroad, creating a
positive balance of trade of $8.3
billion for the national economy.
Travel expenditures within the
United States total $740 billion.
National Tourism Week is sponsored
annually by the Travel Industry
Association, a Washington,
D.C.-based trade association that
represents the common interests and
concerns of travel in America.

LAST CHANCE!!!
The
Corning Area Chamber of Commerce is
creating a “Children’s Activity
Book”. The book will represent
businesses in the community that
would like to welcome and educate
children and their families on all
there is to do and see in the
Corning area.
Consider
the exposure of sponsoring the front
cover, the back cover, or a page
inside the book! The cost for a page
sponsor is $200. The front cover
sponsorship is available for $500
and the back cover sponsorship for
$300. The cover sponsorships are
exclusive and will be sold on a
first come first serve basis.
Inside
sponsored pages may include a
picture to be colored, a maze, a
word search, or a cross word puzzle.
The sponsoring business may submit a
picture, work with an artist to
design their page, or allow the
Chamber to select a picture created
by a child artist. The sponsoring
business’ name will be at the bottom
of their respective page.
The
Children’s Activity Book will be
available in the Information Center
of Corning for visitors to purchase
for a small fee and will also be
available for Members to purchase in
quantity for distribution to
customers.
This is a
great way for us to work together as
community partners! The Chamber has
selected a few artists and secured
an hourly rate for those businesses
who are interested in having a
special picture created for the
sponsored page. Mazes, crosswords,
and word find activities are also
welcome.

information or to participate,
