This presentation explores what poorhouses were, how they developed, who they were meant to serve, who they really benefitted and what social forces led to their creation and their changing over time.
Corning NY –In collaboration with the New York Council for the Humanities, the Corning Painted Post Historical Society presents, Peculiar Institutions: The Poorhouse in New York State by Richard Heyl de Ortiz on June 2, 2016 at 6:30pm at the Schoolhouse in the Heritage Village of the Southern Finger Lakes, 73 W. Pulteney St. Corning. This presentation is free and open to the general public. This event is made possible through the Public Scholars program with the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
