The term community has different meanings to different people, at different times. But, here are some facts to consider. The City of Corning has a population of roughly 10,000 and is home to one Fortune 500 company: Corning Incorporated. In addition, the five blocks of Market Street serve as the community's downtown and as a national standard for the proper blend of historic preservation and commercial vitality. The communities surrounding Corning are major contributors to the area's success. The Village of Painted Post is the location of the Dresser Rand Company. The Town of Erwin is rapidly growing with the expansion of Corning Incorporated's Research & Development facility, the new Photonics Devices Technology plant, as well as some of Steuben County premier residential developments. The Tri-county region consists of Schuyler County (Watkins Glen), Chemung County (Elmira), and Steuben County. These counties have a history of cooperation that seems to improve with time. The Counties share academic institutions (Corning Community College), transportation services (Elmira-Corning Regional Airport, Public Transit), and human service agencies (United Way, The Women's Center).
