SUMMARY:Sirius Quartet with Richie Bierach
DESCRIPTION:Sirius Quartet with Richie Bierach\n\nBeethoven's World in the New Millennium\n\n\n\nTickets still available on the Corning Civic Music website (click here)\n\n\n\nPianist and composer Richie Beirach believes that it is necessary to completely internalize the works of the great composers of the past before sitting down at the piano to rediscover them\, engage in a dialogue with them\, and transform them in a personal way. Working from this conviction for 50 years\, he has created a large and fascinating repertoire.\n\n\n\nFor the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth\, Beirach and the Sirius String Quartet explore and re-imagine compositions by Beethoven\, Mozart\, Purcell\, Bach\, and Bartok through improvisation. Although improvisation is neglected in today's classical concert halls\, it was an integral part of compositional technique and performance in the 18th and 19th centuries. By restoring improvisation to the classical tradition\, this program offers new perspectives on the great masters.\n\n"A stellar ensemble that transforms standard chamber music frameworks with exceptional playing\, writing and arranging... the joy and energy with which they play was palpable." - New York City Jazz Record\n\nThe internationally acclaimed Sirius Quartet combines exhilarating repertoire with improvisational fire. These performer-composers shine with precision\, soul\, and raw energy\, whether they are interpreting traditional music\, premiering works by significant living composers\, or presenting their own compositions. They push beyond the conventional vocabulary of string instruments by incorporating popular song forms\, extended techniques\, and undeniable contemporary grooves.\n\n\n\n\nSirius Quartet\n\n\n\n\n\n"Versatility and flair with lively improvisations..." - The New York Times\n\n\n\n\n\nSirius has played some of the most important venues in the world\, including Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall\, the Beijing Music Festival\, the Cologne Music Triennale\, Stuttgart Jazz\, Musique Actuelle in Canada\, the Taichung Jazz Fest (Taiwan)\, and many others.\n\nIn 2019\, the group released New World\, a politically charged and topical work that explores themes of immigration\, discrimination\, and being an agent of change. The previously released title track was the Grand Prize winner for the New York Philharmonic's "New World Initiative" composition competition in 2017. Composer/violinist Gregor Huebner balances idyllic and hopeful themes from Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 (the "New World" Symphony) with fiercer passages found in the Shostakovich String Quartet No. 8\, which alludes to tensions between the composer and the Soviet Union. "With two immigrant violinists\, we in the quartet feel that it's important to create music that speaks to the moment in which we live and gives hope\," says Huebner.\n\nOther pieces on the album include Huebner's "#STILL\," based on the devastating song "Strange Fruit\," first recorded by Billie Holiday in 1939. Composer/violinist Fung Chern Hwei describes his contribution\, "Beside the Point\," as his "declaration of struggle against discrimination." Cellist/composer Jeremy Harman's "Currents" maintains a vague sense of menace throughout\, prodding the listener out of any complacency. The Beatles' iconic "Eleanor Rigby" and Radiohead's "Knives Out\," both arranged by Huebner\, showcase the group's fierce improvisational acumen. The album is both an impassioned lament for the state of a nation and the world\, and a beautiful and hopeful call to action.
