Painted Journeys: In the Spirit of the American West
On view now through May 4, 2014
Painted Journeys: In the Spirit of the American West developed out of the first Artist-in-Residence Program at the Museum of Northern Arizona. The goal of the program is to develop new understandings of the Colorado Plateau region through the artistic process. In September 2007, three Woodstock, New York, painters - Judy Abbott, K.L. McKenna and Eva van Rijn - were the first artists selected for the new program. The trio, who made their home base in the historic residences of the Museum of Northern Arizona, spent most of their time traveling throughout the region in search of subjects and painting outdoors. The resulting exhibition features a large body of work dedicated to the region. Painted Journeys: In the Spirit of the American West showcases their artistic interpretation in celebration of the spirit of this place, and conveys the artists' contemporary journey in the tradition of the nineteenth century Hudson River Valley artists. The three artists will be present at the exhibition opening to discuss their work and experience.
