Corning Community College and Spencer Crest Nature Center are hosting the 31st Annual Red Baron Half Marathon on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 1 p.m. The 13.1 mile course will begin at the Commons Building on the CCC Spencer Hill campus and wind down the picturesque roads on the back of the hill. Runners will enter downtown Corning through Caton Road, down Park Avenue in South Corning, through Denison Park to Tioga Avenue, cross Centerway Bridge, ending at the Corning Family YMCA. Before race buses are available from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. with the course closing at 3:30 p.m.
There are no steep hills that would be rough on the knees; and yet, from start to finish, there is a gradual 800-foot drop in elevation. Local distance runners regard this course highly, and consider this a great race event. Pre-registered runner fee is $20.
Runners can register the day of the race from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. ($25) or pre-register by completing a registration form located on the Red Baron Marathon web site at http://spencercrest.org/redbaron/index.html.
All proceeds benefit Spencer Crest Nature Center, a non-profit organization providing environmental educational and recreational activities for the greater Corning area. The Center features 250 acres and seven miles of trails with two ponds, a stream, and a museum of natural systems which includes changing displays, an apiary and an environmentally sensitive design.
