Corning Community College’s Workforce Development & Community Education is offering two courses for gardeners and homeowners with presenter Elizabeth Whitehouse of Compost International at Spencer Crest Nature Center, Spencer Hill Road, Corning, NY. “Putting Your Garden to Bed” will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2011, from 9 – 11 a.m. Taking steps now to clear your garden and prepare it for the next growing season will go a long way in making your spring garden chores more enjoyable and your garden more productive. Getting rid of leaves (and turning them to compost) and fading annuals and tidying perennials can help extend your time in the garden before the snow flies. Take advantage of the bright fall colors and crisp sunshine. Program cost is $25.
“Feed the Soil So That It Will Feed You: A Composting Primer” will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011, from 1 – 4 p.m. Learn the basics of composting and see how you can turn your food scraps, yard leaves and waste, and garden remains into compost. By doing so, you reduce the amount of trash going to landfills and produce a soil amendment for your garden. Best of all, there is little to no cost to do so by using recycled materials. Program cost is $35.
