State of Play
“State of Play” comprises painting, drawing, ceramics, and sculpture, with works by Douglas Giebel, Masha Ryskin, Peter Pincus, Sabra Wood, and Jim Zingarelli. As such, it presents different visions, voices, and captivations, that when placed together evinces personal strengths and in such bears witness to a collective beauty. Each artist expresses their work with clarity and conviction, articulating their own unique concepts thus lending tangible evidence to a prevailing state of play.
“State of Play” explores the artistic “condition” or frame of the mind, emotion, and activity especially the fundamental urge to explore materiality and process, where formal elements play their role to create a world inhabited by various methodologies. It seeks a “current situation” in imaginative play involving mutual dealings between spontaneous discovery through human kinetics and the relationship between form, composition, and structure. It also investigates modification and transformation as each artist searches for the essential rhythms that animate their own state of play—their own current situation, defined by an intrinsic freedom of expression.
