Melissa Vandenberg: Rockwell Collaborative Guest Artist
Building on a tradition of collaboration, The Rockwell Museum and Corning Museum of Glass are pleased to once again team up and host a contemporary artist in Corning. This year, we welcome multidisciplinary artist Melissa Vandenberg to the Amphitheater Hot Shop. Vandenberg will work collaboratively with the Hot Glass Team of The Corning Museum of Glass as part of the Guest Artist Series to experiment with new ideas and processes to further enhance her works.
The collaboration is part of The Rockwell’s exhibition series, Antigravity: A Space for Contemporary Perspectives. The 2019 installation in the Rockwell’s entry will feature Vandenberg's installation.
Please note that the artist will take lunch breaks each day, so times may vary.

Inspired by relics of Americana, eastern religious practices, and an overall nostalgia for vintage materials, artist Melissa Vandenberg creates sculptures and installations that address the fleeting nature of power and a lack of permanence with both the tangible and metaphysical. “We impose a lot of metaphors on objects and possessions,” says Vandenberg, “which affects my chosen iconography.”
Born and educated in Detroit, Vandenberg earned a BFA from Center for Creative Studies in Detroit, and an MFA from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. She currently lives and works in eastern Kentucky where she is an associate professor of art at Eastern Kentucky University. Her studio practice explores the political landscape using national identity, folk art, ancestry, immigration, and the perception of a homeland as points of departure. Vandenberg’s work has been exhibited in Canada, Germany, Luxembourg, Iceland, and extensively throughout the United States.
